IMF announces upcoming review visit to Bucharest

Today, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced an upcoming visit to Bucharest by its team from February 3-7, 2025. The purpose of this regular staff visit is to engage with representatives from Romania's new government and the National Bank of Romania. The discussions will focus on reviewing recent economic and financial developments and updating the macroeconomic outlook.

The mission will be led by Mr. Joong Shik Kang, who has taken over as Romania's mission chief following Mr. Jan Kees Martijn's reassignment in accordance with IMF internal policies. Mr. Geoff Gottlieb, IMF Senior Regional Representative for Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, provided details about the visit.

Mr. Joong Shik Kang is a South Korean national currently serving as mission chief for both Romania and Greece. His previous roles include being mission chief for Hong Kong SAR and deputy mission chief to China. He also served as assistant to the director in the Asia and Pacific Department and was mission chief to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. He holds a degree in economics from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
