The United States has expressed congratulations to the Syrian people and the Syrian Democratic Forces, including the Syrian Arab Coalition, on their success in liberating Raqqa from ISIS control. This achievement is a part of the efforts by a 73-member Global Coalition led by the United States, which has contributed to diminishing ISIS's presence across Iraq and Syria.
Secretary Tillerson emphasized that "the liberation of Raqqa is a critical milestone in the global fight against ISIS," highlighting ongoing international efforts to combat terrorism. The Secretary also noted that significant progress has been made since January when ISIS was planning attacks from Raqqa, attributing this success to decisions made by President Trump.
The statement acknowledged the sacrifices made by the Syrian Democratic Forces and U.S. service members who lost their lives in this effort. It also addressed the brutality of ISIS tactics, including using civilians as human shields and leaving mines behind.
As part of ongoing stabilization efforts, coalition members are working to remove explosives left by ISIS and provide humanitarian aid. Support is being given to local entities like the Raqqa Civil Council to re-establish security and essential services for displaced Syrians returning home.
This development marks a new phase in Syria's conflict, with aims to de-escalate violence further. The focus remains on advancing diplomatic efforts under UN Security Council Resolution 2254 for a political transition reflecting the will of the Syrian people.
Tillerson stressed that "ISIS’s loss of Raqqa does not mean our fight against ISIS is over." The Global Coalition will continue its campaign against ISIS using various national powers until all regions are liberated from its influence.
