Four years have passed since the Syrian regime launched a chemical attack using sarin gas on Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus controlled by opposition forces. This attack resulted in over 1,400 deaths, including many children. On this anniversary, the international community reflects on the tragedy and emphasizes the importance of upholding global standards against chemical weapons.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms the use of chemical weapons anywhere, by anyone, under any circumstances," stated Heather Nauert, Department Spokesperson. She reiterated the commitment to not tolerate such actions and to ensure accountability for those responsible.

Since the Ghouta attack, Syria has continued to violate international norms with another sarin gas attack on Khan Shaykun on April 4, 2017. In response, the United States conducted targeted airstrikes on a Syrian regime airbase. "We are prepared to continue to use the necessary means to deter the regime from using such chemical weapons," Nauert added.

The statement calls for the Assad regime to halt its use of chemical weapons and fully disclose its stockpiles. It also urges cooperation with international bodies like the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fact-Finding Mission and Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM). Non-compliance with international laws poses a threat that will be addressed accordingly.
