On July 10, 2017, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson issued a statement celebrating the liberation of Mosul from ISIS control. Speaking on behalf of President Trump and the American people, Tillerson congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi and the citizens of Iraq for reaching this significant milestone in the fight against ISIS. He emphasized that this victory highlights the effectiveness of international efforts led by the Iraqi Security Forces.
Tillerson acknowledged the sacrifices made by both the Iraqi Security Forces and civilians, including the Kurdish Peshmerga, during this operation. He also extended condolences for the lives lost in achieving this victory.
The statement highlighted some of the atrocities committed by ISIS during its occupation of Mosul, including terrorizing civilians and using public facilities as military positions. It noted that as defeat loomed, ISIS destroyed important cultural landmarks such as the historic al-Nuri mosque and al-Hadba minaret.
Moving forward, Tillerson assured that under Iraqi leadership, with support from United States and Coalition partners, efforts will continue to stabilize liberated areas throughout Mosul. This includes assisting displaced civilians in returning to their homes with cooperation from the UN.
Tillerson concluded by stating that much work remains to be done to completely defeat ISIS in Iraq. The Global Coalition remains committed to supporting Iraqi partners in eradicating ISIS wherever it persists.
