The U.S. Embassy in Cairo marked Earth Day 2018 on April 22 by hosting an event at the American Center at the Maadi Public Library. The gathering brought together Egyptians and Americans for an environmental "Teach-In," featuring a film screening, panel discussion, and an exhibition of artwork and consumer products made from recycled plastics.

Chargé d’Affaires Thomas Goldberger opened the event, welcoming experts from non-governmental organizations, the plastics industry, entrepreneurs, and academics. The focus was on this year's global Earth Day theme: "Ending Plastic Pollution." Goldberger stated, “The U.S. Embassy is working with Egyptian partners to encourage environmental protection and sustainable development.” He commended Egyptian panelists and exhibitors for their efforts in protecting Egypt's environment and natural heritage.

Attendees watched an Arabic-subtitled version of the film “A Plastic Ocean,” which addresses the global impact of mismanaged waste and marine debris on marine ecosystems. Following the film, Dr. Charles Lawson, a renowned U.S. water expert, delivered a presentation via videoconference on transboundary water cooperation. Lawson emphasized that water pollution transcends borders and requires cooperative international efforts to protect shared resources.

After Lawson's presentation, a panel discussion took place where Egyptians highlighted local initiatives combating plastic pollution. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo recognized those in Egypt’s public and private sectors as well as civil society who are dedicated to maintaining clean air, land, and water in Egypt.
