House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and Subcommittee Chairman Paul Cook have visited Egypt to discuss the ongoing U.S.-Egyptian partnership and security challenges. The delegation met with Egyptian officials, including Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry and Major General Abbas Kamel, Acting Director of Egypt’s General Intelligence Service. They also engaged with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Thomas H. Goldberger and other officials at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.
Chairman Royce commented on the visit, stating: "Egypt faces serious challenges from ISIS. These terrorists have killed hundreds of innocent Egyptians, including dozens in last year’s Palm Sunday attacks. Strengthening the U.S.-Egypt partnership is critical to defeating this shared threat and advancing other mutual interests." He further urged Egyptian officials to reduce ties with North Korea and promote reforms for economic growth and civil society.
