The U.S. government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the American University in Cairo, has inaugurated two career development centers at Mansoura University. The event marks a significant step in enhancing employment opportunities for students.
“These centers will help students prepare for, and attain, employment,” stated USAID/Egypt Mission Director Sherry F. Carlin. “Students who use these career development centers will receive support to tailor their career paths based on market trends. They will also benefit from linkages between the universities and industries in the Delta.”
The initiative is part of a larger effort by USAID to expand a pilot career development center model that has previously resulted in numerous employment opportunities for university students across Egypt. The expanded project, valued at $20 million, aims to establish 12 University Centers for Career Development across 20 universities located in greater Cairo, the Delta, and Upper Egypt. This expansion is expected to reach up to 70% of university students throughout Egypt.
These newly established centers are designed to offer training, networking opportunities, and strengthen connections between universities and the private sector. This approach seeks to enhance career prospects and provide job training for both current students and alumni. Additionally, staff at these centers will be trained as qualified career service providers capable of offering professional guidance to ensure long-term sustainability.
A key partner in this project is the International Labour Organization (ILO), which will play a crucial role by training staff on labor market information collection and analysis. The ILO will also focus on developing staff capacity to assist students with disabilities effectively.
USAID's involvement with these Career Development Centers is part of a broader $30 billion investment by the American people in Egypt since 1978 through USAID initiatives.
