President Donald J. Trump of the United States and Chairman Kim Jong Un of North Korea held a historic summit in Singapore on June 12, 2018. The meeting marked the first of its kind between leaders of the two nations.

During their discussions, President Trump and Chairman Kim exchanged views on establishing new U.S.–DPRK relations and building lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula. President Trump assured security guarantees to North Korea, while Chairman Kim reiterated his commitment to denuclearization.

Both leaders expressed belief that new U.S.–DPRK relations would enhance peace and prosperity globally. They emphasized that mutual confidence-building could aid in denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The joint statement outlined several commitments: establishing new relations as desired by both peoples, collaborating for stable peace on the peninsula, working towards complete denuclearization per the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, and recovering POW/MIA remains with immediate repatriation of those identified.

Acknowledging this summit as a significant event in reducing longstanding tensions, both parties pledged to implement their agreements swiftly. Follow-up negotiations will be led by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a high-level DPRK official at an early date to advance summit outcomes.

President Trump and Chairman Kim have committed to fostering cooperation for developing U.S.–DPRK relations and promoting peace, prosperity, and security worldwide.
