Several European countries have joined the United States in recognizing Juan Guaido as the Interim President of Venezuela. Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom announced their recognition on February 4th. This decision aligns with a resolution passed by the European Parliament on January 31st.
Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo expressed support for these nations' decisions. "We welcome the decision today by Austria... to recognize Juan Guaido as the Interim President of Venezuela," he stated. Pompeo emphasized that this recognition is consistent with Venezuela's constitution.
Pompeo also called for additional international support: "We encourage all countries... to support the Venezuelan people by recognizing Interim President Guaido." He urged other EU member states to back efforts led by Venezuela's National Assembly aimed at restoring constitutional democracy in the country.
The Secretary reiterated a call directed at Venezuelan military and security forces to uphold their country's constitution and ensure safety for all citizens. "We repeat our call to the Venezuelan military and security forces... protect all Venezuelan citizens," Pompeo added.
This move marks an important step in international efforts to address political turmoil in Venezuela.
