The first Egyptian Defense Exposition (EDEX 2018) was marked by a reception in Cairo, attended by Charge d’Affaires Thomas Goldberger. The event brought together representatives from the diplomatic and military attaché corps, as well as members of the private sector.
Goldberger opened his remarks by paying tribute to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, who passed away recently. He highlighted Bush's contributions to U.S.-Egypt relations during pivotal moments such as the liberation of Kuwait.
"We have been looking forward to EDEX 2018 for many months," said Goldberger, acknowledging Egypt's efforts in launching the international exposition with over 350 exhibitors participating. "Creating a new international conference from the ground up is not an easy task."
The presence of more than 40 American companies at EDEX underscored their interest in partnering with Egypt on security challenges. "There is no doubt in our minds that American companies are the most advanced and capable in the world," Goldberger stated.
He also emphasized the importance of U.S.-Egypt defense ties, describing them as a pillar of bilateral strategic partnership. Goldberger expressed gratitude towards Brigadier General Hossam al-Shihawy and colleagues from Egypt’s Ministry of Defense for their leadership.
Senior U.S. officials including Deputy Assistant Secretary Ann Cataldo and Major General Ralph Groover were present at the event, reinforcing U.S. commitment to supporting Egypt's security needs through initiatives like Foreign Military Financing.
"The message that I have for visiting executives of U.S. companies is that the Embassy is here to support you," he assured, highlighting ongoing efforts to bolster security and stability in Egypt and beyond.
Goldberger concluded by thanking participants for their engagement with EDEX 2018 and expressed wishes for their success.
