Assiut, Egypt – The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has been supporting Egypt in providing clean water to its citizens for over four decades. On November 26, USAID, alongside the Assiut Potable Water and Sanitation Company and Egypt’s Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, inaugurated two significant water facilities in Assiut Governorate: the Massara Water Treatment Plant and the Alexandria El Tahreer Wastewater Pump Station and Collection System.

Sherry F. Carlin, USAID Egypt Mission Director, stated, “Since 2009, USAID’s support has helped over 370,000 residents of Assiut have access to potable water and sanitation.” She emphasized that these new facilities "will improve the health and living conditions, as well as the livelihoods, of thousands of families."

USAID collaborates with local entities like the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater to build or upgrade water infrastructure in underserved areas using local contractors and low-maintenance technologies. Additionally, it aids in enhancing operations management within these organizations to ensure better service delivery.

Since 1979, USAID has invested more than $3.5 billion into constructing or upgrading water systems across Egypt. This effort is part of a broader $30 billion investment by American taxpayers aimed at improving various aspects of life in Egypt since 1978.
