Violence against women is a significant global issue impacting millions annually. On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed on November 25, the United States reiterates its commitment to gender equality and addressing violence against women and girls. This includes domestic and sexual violence, forced marriage, and so-called honor killings.
Secretary Pompeo stated that "every woman and girl deserves a life free from violence," emphasizing the need for collective action from governments, the private sector, civil society, and faith-based organizations. The U.S. is participating in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with this year's theme being “Ending Gender-Based Violence in the World of Work.”
According to Secretary Pompeo, "societies that empower women to participate fully in civic and economic life are more prosperous and peaceful." He highlighted that ending workplace violence allows women to reach their potential as leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators. The United States is focused on providing workforce development and skills training for women and girls while promoting women's entrepreneurship, expanding access to capital, and eliminating gender discrimination at work.
