The United States has expressed support for the Government of Ghana's decision to allow private sector participation in the power sector through a concession. This announcement was made during the Millennium Development Authority Procurement workshop held on April 30th. Deputy Minister of Power, John Abdulai Jinapor, stated that "we have to transform the power sector."
The workshop served as a platform for discussing business and procurement opportunities under Compact II, sponsored by the Millennium Development Authority and various business organizations in Ghana.
Gene A. Cretz, the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, welcomed this development on behalf of the United States. He highlighted the extensive due diligence and deliberation involved in reaching this decision. Ambassador Cretz emphasized that "this will be a competitive selection process to determine who will direct activities of transformation of ECG." He further remarked that making this decision is a significant milestone towards advancing the implementation of the Compact.
