Dr. Dirk Schumacher has been appointed as the new Chief Economist of KfW Group and will start his role on April 1, 2025. Stefan Wintels, CEO of KfW, remarked on Schumacher's extensive background: “Having worked for a wide range of different banks as well as the European Central Bank, Dr. Schumacher will bring many years of broad experience of economic analysis.”

Schumacher is set to lead the Economics Department at KfW, also known as KfW Research. Wintels expressed anticipation for Schumacher's contributions: “His main focus is on the German and European economy. We very much look forward to his expertise.”

Dr. Schumacher's career began in 1997 at Commerzbank's Economics Department. He later joined Goldman Sachs in 1999, where he focused on macro research and was appointed Managing Director in 2010 with responsibilities for Germany’s economic analysis.

In 2017, he became Principal Economist at the European Central Bank and since January 2018 has led the European Macro Research Team at Natixis, a French investment bank.

At KfW, Dr. Schumacher will take over from Dr. Fritzi Köhler-Geib, who departed from the bank in November 2024.
