Consumer spending in the UK remained flat in December, according to the latest Barclays Consumer Spend report. While overall growth showed no change compared to the previous year, shifts in spending habits were observed as consumers prioritized entertainment and travel over essential purchases.
Entertainment experienced a notable increase, with cinema visits rising by 52.1 percent. The strong performance of entertainment contributed to a 6.0 percent rise in this category. Travel also saw a boost of 4.7 percent as people booked trips for the upcoming year.
However, essential spending fell by 3.0 percent, largely due to reduced fuel expenditures amid lower petrol prices and ongoing inflation concerns. "Nine in ten adults said they were concerned about both rising food prices (86 per cent) and household bills (87 per cent)," reflecting consumer caution.
Supermarket spending declined by 2.0 percent as two-thirds of consumers sought more value from their weekly shopping routines or reduced their expenses altogether.
Despite financial pressures, some consumers still indulged during the festive season, with two in five treating themselves and loved ones despite potential impacts on finances.
Online retail grew by 2.6 percent while face-to-face sales decreased by 1.2 percent, indicating a preference for online shopping during this period.
The garden centers' segment grew by 3.1 percent as consumers prepared for the New Year with seasonal decorations and improvements to outdoor spaces.
In hospitality sectors such as restaurants and pubs, modest growth was recorded due to cost-saving measures among diners coupled with health-related concerns from widespread illnesses termed "quad-demic."
