The World Trade Organization (WTO) recently held a farewell ceremony for its Young Professionals Programme participants. The programme, aimed at individuals from countries underrepresented in the WTO Secretariat, has concluded another successful year.

Addressing the young professionals, the speaker emphasized their significant contributions over the past year. "By now you have probably gathered that I am a results-oriented person. And what I have heard about your work, and in some cases seen with my own eyes, has been impressive," they remarked.

Throughout their term, the participants were involved in various activities at the WTO. They played a role in supporting members' preparations for MC13 and continued assisting efforts to implement outcomes from Abu Dhabi or advance negotiations where needed. "In sum, you were at the heart of the Secretariat's work to help Members lay the foundation for the reforms needed to ensure that the WTO keeps delivering tangible benefits for people and the planet in the years and decades ahead," said the speaker.

Special mention was made of two professionals, Diana Arjune and Osama Moeed Nawab, whose contributions were highly valued by their colleagues. The success of this programme was attributed to generous donor support. Appreciation was extended to all contributors to the Global Trust Fund.

Participants are expected to return home soon, carrying valuable expertise and knowledge gained during their time with WTO. The speaker expressed confidence that alumni would utilize these skills effectively, whether by assisting governments or engaging more actively in global trade.

Networking was encouraged among participants as well as with WTO officials and other international organizations based in Geneva. Those interested in pursuing careers within the Secretariat were advised to apply for future openings.

Gratitude was also extended towards Ambassadors, delegates present at the ceremony, donors who supported this initiative, and Secretariat staff members from ITTC and Human Resources Division—Samer, Hye Seung, Queenie Maumbea along with directors Bridget Chilala & Alison Stone—for their cooperation throughout this period.

The event concluded with best wishes for future endeavors: "I wish you all good luck in your future endeavours and safe travels back to your respective countries and families."
