Chronic diseases are increasingly affecting young Canadians, according to a recent report from Sun Life. The study examined drug claims data from over three million Sun Life plan members over five years. It revealed that nearly half of all Canadians, 45.1%, live with at least one major chronic disease. Diabetes emerged as the fastest-growing condition, with claims rising by approximately 30% between 2019 and 2023.

The report highlighted a concerning trend among younger plan members, where chronic disease drug claims have surged faster than in older age groups during the same period. Specifically, diabetes drug claims for individuals under 30 grew two to four times faster compared to those aged 30 to 60. Similarly, high blood pressure and asthma claims increased significantly among those under 30.

Notably, young women showed higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure claims than their male counterparts. "This report and these alarming numbers should be a wake-up call," stated Marie-Chantal Côté, Senior Vice-President of Group Benefits at Sun Life. She emphasized the economic impact of chronic diseases due to absenteeism and disability.

Factors such as climbing obesity rates, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, poor mental health, and increased stress levels are contributing to the rise in chronic diseases among Canadians. The pandemic also exacerbated these issues by disrupting medical appointments and hindering healthy lifestyle choices.

Alison Chick, Senior Vice-President of Health Solutions at Sun Life, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach: "Tackling and preventing chronic health diseases requires all hands on deck." She advocated for creating holistic support systems tailored to individual needs.

Sun Life is addressing this issue through various health solutions aimed at supporting clients' well-being.
