The ANZ Group Board has announced that Nuno Matos will take over as Chief Executive Officer on July 3, 2025. He will succeed Shayne Elliott, who is retiring after nine years in the role. Mr. Matos will also join the boards of ANZ Group Holdings Limited and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited as an Executive Director.

Paul O’Sullivan, Chairman of ANZ Group, expressed satisfaction with the appointment: “We are very pleased an international banker of Nuno’s calibre and extensive experience will be joining ANZ as our new Chief Executive to lead the execution of our strategy.”

Mr. Matos brings over 30 years of experience in retail, commercial, and wholesale banking. He was most recently CEO of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC, overseeing 87,000 employees serving around 40 million customers across 35 markets. His career at HSBC began in 2015 after leaving Santander where he served as Global Head of Consumer in its Retail and Commercial Division.

His roles at HSBC included CEO positions for HSBC Bank plc and HSBC Europe, managing transformations within their European business. He also held leadership roles in Mexico and Latin America.

Shayne Elliott joined ANZ in 2009 and has served as Global Managing Director Institutional and Chief Financial Officer before becoming CEO. He will step down from his position on July 2, 2025.

O’Sullivan commented on the leadership transition: “Nuno’s appointment is the culmination of long-term systematic work by the Board on leadership succession...we know Nuno is the right person to build on the transformation already well progressed under the leadership of Shayne and his team.”

Matos stated: “I’ve long admired ANZ...and it’s an honour to have been chosen by the Board to lead the next phase of ANZ’s evolution.”

Reflecting on Elliott's contributions, O'Sullivan said: “Shayne led the critical transformation that will be the cornerstone of ANZ’s long term success...He rebalanced our portfolio to materially improve capital efficiency."

Elliott remarked: “Leading ANZ over the last nine years has been the highlight of my career...I’m confident ANZ has a great future.”

Details regarding Mr. Matos's career history are provided in Attachment 1, while terms of his appointment are outlined in Attachment 2. Mr. Elliott's leaving entitlements are summarized in Attachment 3.
