ANZ has announced the appointment of Sam Garland as Group General Manager, Internal Audit. He will report to Christine O’Reilly, Chair of the Audit Committee, and have an internal management reporting line to ANZ Chief Executive Officer Shayne Elliott.
Garland brings 20 years of experience in professional services with a focus on financial services. He joins ANZ from PwC Australia, where he served as the Banking and Capital Markets Leader. In this role, he led client relationships and provided assurance and advice on risk management, regulation, and complex change.
Shayne Elliott commented on the appointment: “I am pleased to appoint Sam to this important role. His seniority and deep expertise in financial services ensures he is well placed to provide the Board and our Executive Committee with independent and objective assurance of our operations.”
Garland will succeed Paul Orton, who is retiring after 14 years at ANZ. Orton has been recognized for his leadership and integrity during his tenure, particularly since leading Group Internal Audit from 2021.
The appointment is pending regulatory approval. Garland will be based in Melbourne and is expected to start in early 2025.
