A significant gathering took place as Axel van Trotsenburg delivered opening remarks at the IDA21 Final Replenishment Meeting. The meeting, which faced challenges due to unforeseen circumstances, focused on finalizing the IDA21 replenishment.

The event commenced with cultural performances, highlighting the impact of investing in people. Van Trotsenburg emphasized the importance of collaboration in leveraging IDA's power to support 78 low-income countries worldwide.

"This is more than a pledging session – it is a testament to the enduring power of multilateralism and our collective belief that we are stronger together," he stated.

Van Trotsenburg acknowledged the global challenges such as climate disasters, conflicts, poverty, and pandemics but noted the resolve and solidarity present among attendees. He praised donors for their increased pledges despite challenging conditions.

"Take one dollar contributed we will be able to provide nearly $4 dollars in mostly concessional financing to IDA countries, creating real, measurable impact where it’s most needed," he explained.

Discussions over two days aimed to strengthen IDA's support for countries. Practical goals include helping 300 million Africans gain electricity access and improving health services for 1.5 billion people.

As highlighted by Emi's poem during the event: "Disaster has never carved a wound that sisterhood couldn't mend."

Van Trotsenburg underscored IDA's commitment not just to aid but transformation, emphasizing partnership and results. He pointed out Korea's journey from an IDA recipient to donor as an example of human potential investment success.

He concluded by urging participants to focus on transforming lives and building a better world together through their commitments at this meeting.

"The pledges made in this room will send a strong signal to the hundreds of millions of beneficiary in IDA countries that we stand in solidarity and shared commitment to work together," he affirmed.
