The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has reported that personal income in current dollars rose in 2,814 counties, fell in 295, and remained unchanged in five counties during 2023. The increase was 6.0 percent in metropolitan areas and 4.7 percent in nonmetropolitan regions.

In metropolitan counties, the change ranged from a high of 17.3 percent in Oldham County, Texas, to a low of -8.6 percent in Oliver County, North Dakota. In nonmetropolitan counties, Sherman County, Texas saw an increase of 38.7 percent while Sheridan County, North Dakota experienced a decrease of -29.1 percent.

Per capita personal income also saw growth with a rise of 5.5 percent in metropolitan areas and 4.4 percent in nonmetropolitan areas for the year.

The BEA's county personal income estimates provide detailed geographic insights into national personal income for the year 2023 following earlier national and state estimates released earlier this year.

The BEA's update includes revisions to annual estimates from previous years based on new data sources and methodologies.

Additionally, the BEA announced plans to start publishing combined reports on gross domestic product and personal income by county and metropolitan area starting December 2025.
