ANZ has announced a financial support initiative for customers and businesses in New South Wales and southern Queensland affected by the ongoing mouse plague. The infestation, which has been exacerbated by a bumper harvest season, has caused extensive damage to agricultural lands, impacting properties and crops.

The bank is urging affected customers to reach out to their agribusiness bankers to explore available financial support options. These measures may include waiving fees and temporarily pausing loan repayments.

Mark Bennett, ANZ's head of Agribusiness, stated: “This plague is proving very costly and disruptive. Many regional customers were still finding their feet after the drought and now as they recover, they have another problem to deal with.”

Bennett highlighted the destruction caused by the mice: “Mice have destroyed stored hay and grain and continue to raid freshly sown crops, meaning many farmers have lost valuable inventory and have been forced to re-sow. We want to support our impacted customers and we hope the measures can help them navigate these issues with improved confidence.”
