ANZ Bank is taking steps to bring older workers back into the workforce, according to a recent discussion between Shayne Elliott, ANZ CEO, and Mark Burrows from Nine News. The initiative aims to address the issue of more than half a million Australians over the age of 45 currently on JobSeeker.
Shayne Elliott emphasized the importance of life experience in customer-facing roles within the bank. "We're a people business. We have to deal with real people out in the community," he stated. He highlighted that older individuals often possess the necessary skills for these positions.
Elliott acknowledged that recruiting older workers presents challenges, as many are not familiar with modern recruitment platforms such as LinkedIn and Glassdoor. To address this, ANZ collaborates with various providers, including government agencies, to reach potential candidates who might have suitable backgrounds and are open to learning.
For those interested in joining ANZ, Elliott mentioned that they could contact him directly via email at Shayne.Elliott@anz.com. He noted that he had already received several CVs from interested candidates.
The conversation also touched on ANZ's efforts to support customers during difficult times. With multiple states facing lockdowns due to COVID-19, Elliott explained how banks like ANZ offer assistance through loan deferrals and fee waivers for those struggling financially. "There's really nothing that's off the table in terms of what banks can do to help," he assured.
