ANZ has pledged $100,000 to Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia as part of efforts to aid Afghan refugees. The bank is also offering services to support resettlement, such as banking assistance, financial inclusion, and employment opportunities.
Shayne Elliott, ANZ's Chief Executive Officer, expressed the company's commitment: “We want to play our role in helping to welcome and resettle Afghan refugees as they seek a safe future for themselves and their families."
Elliott emphasized the contributions of migrants and refugees in Australia: "Migrants and refugees have made a significant contribution to Australia over many years... Welcoming new Afghan refugees will help add to that legacy and build a better community for the future."
Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia CEO Lisa Button explained how ANZ’s donation would be used: “ANZ’s donation will contribute to a unique community support program to provide Afghan refugees with social support and practical help from individuals in their local community."
The program encourages groups of Australians to form local support teams for refugee households during their initial months in the country. This initiative can be organized through various community channels.
ANZ is further encouraging its employees to contribute by double-matching donations made through its workplace giving program. Contributions will go towards supporting humanitarian efforts by partners such as the Australian Red Cross, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, and World Vision Australia.
