Rafael Epstein, a host on ABC Radio Melbourne Drive, engaged in a conversation with Alexis George, the deputy CEO of ANZ. The discussion centered around the implications of recent announcements by the State Government and Chief Health Officer regarding office capacity limits in Melbourne.
The State Government's decision allows office buildings to return to full capacity. However, as George explained, "It's over a year now that most of our people in Melbourne have been working from home." ANZ had previously adapted its workplace to comply with regulations, currently allowing only 50% occupancy due to physical distancing requirements.
George highlighted that ANZ envisions a hybrid work model moving forward: "Our vision of the work going forward is going to be two to three days in the office and two to three days at home." This approach aligns with employee preferences and aims to balance culture and leadership development with flexibility.
When asked about reaching 80% occupancy, George stated, "I'd like to think we'll get back to the 80 per cent, but it's going to take time Raf." She acknowledged that returning entirely to pre-pandemic office attendance is unlikely: "We're not going to go back to everyone working in the office every day a week."
Regarding ANZ's property footprint in Melbourne, George noted ongoing evaluations: "We've been consolidating down into that campus over a number of years." The company will continue assessing its needs based on employee behavior post-pandemic.
The impact of government capacity limits was also discussed. According to George, these limits matter because they allow full teams to work together: "I think it does allow us to be a bit more flexible with that footprint and just create that greater sense of fun about being back there."
The conversation concluded with Epstein thanking George for her insights into how ANZ plans to navigate this transition period.
