ANZ Institutional has announced the appointment of two executives in its commodities and environmental markets sectors, reinforcing its commitment to supporting customers' transition to net zero. Stuart Smith has been appointed as Head of Commodities, based in Singapore. He will report to Anshul Sidher, Head of Trading and Markets Asia.
Smith transitions from Citibank, where he served as Head of Commodities APAC. His career includes leadership roles such as Global Head of Commodity Structuring at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Head of Commodity Sales & Structuring for Deutsche Bank Asia, and leading LNG Trading at Goldman Sachs. In his new role at ANZ, Smith will oversee commodities sales and trading across five markets, covering energy, agri-commodities, precious metals, and carbon.
"Stuart brings an impressive track record in building businesses and unique experience in both sales and risk management," said Shayne Collins, ANZ Managing Director of Markets. "The Commodities business is an important pillar of the Bank’s environmental sustainability strategy and his unique understanding of the energy markets positions our team exceptionally well."
Andreas Kodell has been named ANZ's first Head of Environmental Markets. He will report jointly to Christina Tonkin, ANZ Managing Director of Corporate Finance, and Shayne Collins. Kodell joined ANZ last year as an ESG Advisor from KEAL Capital (now part of Melqart), where he was a partner. His experience spans nearly three decades in investment banking and funds with senior roles at Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns, and Deutsche Bank. Kodell also played a role in founding the Cyclades Preservation Fund in Greece and the Devon Environment Foundation in the UK.
In his new position, Kodell will collaborate closely with Katharine Tapley, ANZ Head of Sustainable Finance, alongside the Markets team including Smith to expand the bank’s environmental markets offerings.
"As a leading Sustainability bank in the region," stated Ms Tonkin, "our priority is to help our customers capture opportunities that will help them hit their net zero targets. This is an important new role helping bring together our existing strength in this area while also building on it for the future."
Recently recognized for its efforts in sustainability, ANZ’s Institutional business received accolades as Best Bank for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Finance by the Australian Corporate Treasury Association (ACTA) awards.
