ANZ has launched its electronic payment service, ANZ eGate, in Tonga. This service allows businesses to securely accept payments through online sales. David Dudley, ANZ Tonga Country Head, stated that this development provides "an exciting new option for businesses in Tonga looking to grow by expanding online."
Dudley highlighted the resilience of Tongan business owners who have faced challenges such as Tropical Cyclone Gita in 2018, COVID-19, Cyclone Harold in April 2020, and the HungaTonga-HungaHa’apai undersea volcano eruption last year. He noted that these entrepreneurs have much to offer globally.
The introduction of ANZ eGate is expected to benefit both large and small businesses by providing a secure online payment channel. Dudley emphasized that with the global increase in online trade, it is an opportune time for Tongan products to reach international markets.
"Funds will go through ANZ eGate to the business account instantly," Dudley explained, which can enhance cash flow for business owners. He also mentioned that this service could change how the Tongan diaspora supports family and friends during emergencies.
ANZ eGate is already used by businesses in Fiji, Samoa, the Cook Islands, PNG, New Zealand, and Australia. Dudley expressed confidence that it would open up significant opportunities for businesses in Tonga as well.
