Mr. Yasser El-Gammal has been appointed as the World Bank Country Manager for Romania and Hungary, effective from October 1, 2024. Based in Bucharest, he will oversee the World Bank's operations in both countries and lead discussions with government officials, private sector representatives, civil society, and other stakeholders.

"As Country Manager, I will work closely with all counterparts and partners in Romania and Hungary to strengthen our partnerships for the benefit of the citizens of both countries," stated Mr. El-Gammal. He emphasized the World Bank Group's role as a strategic partner in Romania's pursuit of its national development goals. "From improving human capital outcomes and unlocking private sector investment to increasing resilience and accelerating a green transition, I look forward to supporting the Government’s efforts to promote prosperity and address inequality in a livable Romania."

Mr. El-Gammal holds Egyptian and Canadian citizenships and has been with the World Bank since 1996. His experience includes managerial roles such as Country Manager in Rwanda and Regional Social Protection Manager for the Middle East and East Asia.

He takes over from Ms. Anna Akhalkatsi.

The World Bank has maintained a presence in Romania since 1991, providing investment loans, guarantees, grants across various sectors of the Romanian economy. Additionally, it offers Advisory Services and Analytics through Reimbursable Advisory Services to support governmental development priorities and enhance institutional capacities for more efficient public administration.
