The World Bank has announced the appointment of Mr. Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye as the new Country Director for the Maghreb and Malta, effective July 9, 2024. He succeeds Mr. Jesko Hentschel, who served in the position for five years.

Mr. Ndiaye will oversee the World Bank's engagements with the governments of Algeria, Libya, Malta, Morocco, and Tunisia. His role includes collaborating with development partners and other stakeholders on initiatives that align with both the countries' priorities and the World Bank's vision to eliminate poverty globally while ensuring a livable planet.

He will also oversee a financing portfolio of $11.5 billion and provide innovative knowledge, policy recommendations, and advisory services. His efforts will focus on supporting inclusive growth, private sector job creation, climate resilience, access to critical infrastructure, and human capital development—particularly for women and youth.

Mr. Ndiaye brings over 25 years of development experience to his new role at the World Bank. His career includes various operational and leadership positions across Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Before this appointment, he was the Director of Strategy & Operations for Equitable Finance & Inclusive Growth at the World Bank.
