Amidst the global push for increased international trade to alleviate poverty and enhance economic opportunities, a recent study has shed light on the gender-specific challenges faced by women in cross-border trade in Jordan. The research, conducted by the World Bank, aimed to identify barriers encountered by women-led businesses engaging in trade activities in the country.

According to the study, men predominantly dominate cross-border trade in merchandise goods in Jordan. Despite this, the primary hurdles faced by women-led businesses were not directly linked to official border processes and procedures. The findings suggest that while women-led businesses may encounter disadvantages in certain trade facilitation aspects, the disparities are not significant.

The data collected in the survey provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of existing processes and procedures related to trade facilitation in Jordan. The analysis primarily focused on aspects outlined in the World Trade Organization Trade Facilitation Agreement.

In response to the study's findings, a set of recommendations has been proposed to address gender-specific issues and broader concerns related to border processes and procedures. These recommendations aim to enhance access to official regulations, increase awareness of pre-declaration procedures, streamline documentation submission through electronic means, and bolster consultation mechanisms among other measures.

The study, funded by the World Bank's Jordan Growth Multi-Donor Trust Fund, received support from various countries including the United Kingdom, the Kingdom of The Netherlands, Canada, Norway, and Germany.

The comprehensive examination of gender-specific challenges in cross-border trade in Jordan underscores the importance of addressing barriers to ensure equal participation and opportunities for women in the trade sector.
