BusinessEurope Reacts to EU Co-legislators' Deal on Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation

Dec 5 2023

Commenting on the political agreement reached last night by EU co-legislators on the proposal for an Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer expressed his views on the matter. Beyrer stated, "We welcome the deal on the ecodesign proposal, but concerns remain about the feasibility of information requirements."

Beyrer further elaborated on the potential impact of the ecodesign regulation, stating, "The ecodesign regulation has the potential to create a strong market for circular products and accelerate the transition." He also highlighted the improvements made in the deal compared to the original Commission proposal, noting the introduction of time for businesses to adapt to the new ecodesign requirements and the inclusion of social sustainability and due diligence requirements to align with environmental and climate objectives.

However, Beyrer emphasized ongoing concerns regarding the information requirements, citing potential overburden on supply chain actors due to broad definitions such as 'substances of concern' that could lead to legal uncertainties for companies.

In conclusion, Beyrer emphasized the importance of timely adoption of secondary legislation for the success of the regulation and called on the Commission to involve industry expertise throughout the process.
