BusinessEurope today released findings from a recent survey of European companies, shedding light on the significant labour and skills shortages prevalent in the region. According to BusinessEurope Director General Markus J. Beyrer, "Our survey of European companies confirmed that they are facing growing labour and skills shortages. This is fuelled by three factors: demographic change, high rates of inactivity and low levels of intra-EU mobility. These shortages will continue to be Europe’s key labour market challenge in the coming years."
The survey revealed that companies are encountering difficulties in finding skilled workers across all levels. Particularly, there is a pronounced scarcity in technical and engineering-related professions, with nearly half of respondents indicating a demand for digital and STEM skills.
To address the challenges posed by these shortages, companies are resorting to hiring individuals who may not fully meet job requirements and providing training post-employment. Additionally, the survey underscores the importance of enhancing intra-EU mobility and third-country migration to alleviate talent scarcities. As highlighted by the respondents, "Almost two thirds (66%) of the respondents also underline the need for greater intra-EU mobility and third-country migration to help offset their talent shortages."
The data from the survey emphasizes the necessity for a comprehensive EU action plan that addresses employment, education, training, as well as mobility and migration. Beyrer stressed, "This action plan needs to be embedded in a wider European competitiveness strategy."
