Matternet has extended its drone operations in Switzerland through its partnership with Swiss Post to develop a citywide drone network, according to a press release.

"We thank Swiss Post for the partnership and all that we accomplished together over the last five years," said Andreas Raptopoulos, CEO of Matternet, in the release. "With the extensive experience we have gained from operating drone delivery networks over Swiss cities since 2017, we are now ready to take the next step toward our vision of citywide, ultra-fast and environmentally-friendly drone delivery networks in Switzerland."

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, the California-based commercial delivery company will assume all drone delivery business-related operations from Swiss Post on top of its existing technology platform and drone delivery service offerings.

The network’s primary focus will be “health care logistics for B2B and B2C applications. Further details will be announced in the coming months,” the press release states.

The integration adds onto the works achieved by Matternet through its five-year partnership with Swiss Post, which also includes the first BVLOS commercial drone delivery route over a city in Lugano, established in 2017 and the first BVLOS commercial drone delivery route in a major European city in Zurich, established in 2018.

Matternet deemed Switzerland to be the appropriate location for the launch after noting a significant advancement in its local drone delivery industry, which is primarily led by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation.

“Matternet's vision is that the city of the future will rely on a citywide drone delivery network to fulfill urgent logistics needs for health care and help transition on-demand e-commerce to a sustainable mode of transport,” the press release states.
