The US-China Business Council (USCBC) hired Rory Murphy last month to fill a vice president of government affairs role at its Washington, D.C. office. The appointment was confirmed by President Craig Allen.
“Rory has a distinguished record working with Congress and the private sector on complex trade issues involving the United States and China, and we’re delighted to have him on our team,” Allen said.
Murphy’s arrival comes as the council’s 260 members work to battle a strained relationship between the U.S. and China, driven by government disagreements, trade reneges, trade and investing restrictions, tariffs and current circumstances driven by the pandemic. His appointment will serve as a replacement for former member Anna Ashton, who formed part of the council for six years.
“I am excited to join the council’s robust team of experts during what will no doubt be a busy time in the bilateral relationship,” Murphy said, who until recently was a lobbyist and attorney at Squire Patton Boggs, specializing in international trade with a focus on China. “I’m looking forward to continuing my work on U.S.-China policy and advocating on behalf of the council’s members.”
After earning an undergraduate degree from Seton Hall University and a law degree from the Catholic University of America, Murphy went on to work at the Export-Import Bank of the United States, where he advised its chairman about potential solutions and formed part of the Senate Finance Committee. The executive also provided international trade advice to former Committee Chair Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) and other officials.
