The National Committee on U.S.-China Relations (NCUSR) will host an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the singing of the Shanghai Communique.
The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Shanghai time) Feb. 25, but can also be accessed virtually the day prior at 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. EST, according to NCUSR.
"Prominent representatives of the diplomatic, business, and academic communities will examine how people-to-people relations, economic cooperation, and diplomatic interactions have influenced the Sino-American relationship and how bi-lateral relations might evolve in the coming 50 years," the NCUSR website reads. "All NCUSCR members and friends are welcome to attend virtually. Shanghai-based NCUSCR members will receive an email with instructions for those wishing to attend in-person."
The event will invite 100 members, according to NCUSR.
Keynote speakers include Dr. Henry Kissinger, Madam Zhou Bingde, Ambassador Cui Tiankai and Ambassador Gary Locke, according to NCUSR.
"Former diplomats and leading academics will discuss how diplomacy has evolved since the Shanghai Communiqué, the political environment in both countries in 1972 compared to today, and predictions for how the bilateral relationship will evolve," according to NCUSR.
NCUSR reports that Panel 1 features Beatrice Camp of the American Diplomacy, Huang Renwei of Shanghai Academy of School Sciences, Kenneth Jarrett or Albright Stonebridge and Susan Thornton of Yale Law School. The moderator for the panel will be Stephen Orlins of the NCUSCR.
According to NCUSR, Panel 2 includes Christine Lam of Citibank, Jeffrey Lehman of NYU Shanghai, Roberta Lipson of United Family Healthcare and Walter Liu of American Express. The moderator for the second panel will be Sean Stein of Burling LLP.
The National Committee has been around for over 50 years and works to address political, social, economic, and security challenges in the Sino-American relationship, according to the NCUSR.
"As U.S.-China relations face increasing friction, we are confronted with a new era of bilateral and global uncertainty, underscoring the urgency of our mission and the importance of stable and productive relations between the world's two greatest economic and military powers," NCUSCR President Stephen Orlins said on the NCUSR website. "The National Committee is committed to promoting forthright dialogue, mutual understanding, and constructive cooperation through our four programmatic areas."
