Trinseo, a global manufacturer of plastics and latex binders, announced Jan. 3 the acquisition of Heathland B.V., a collector and recycler of post-industrial and post-consumer plastic waste across Europe.

"Today is another exciting milestone in Trinseo's transformation journey in becoming a global specialty materials and sustainable solutions provider," Francesca Reverberi, SVP and chief sustainability officer of Trinseo said in a Business Wire report. "The addition of Heathland to the Trinseo family enables the group to have access to comprehensive recycling technologies and plastic wastes as feedstock. The shared sustainability vision of both companies has now become one. We will continue to invest in the movement toward a circular economy."

Heathland, which is based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, specializes in handling "PCR and PIR polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polystyrene (PS) and other thermoplastic waste," according to the report.

The company utilizes several chemical and mechanical recycling procedures for processing plastic waste. After that, the waste is converted into high-quality recycled material.

The acquisition is in line  Trinseo's 2030 Sustainability Goals, the report stated. These goals are mainly focused on embedding sustainability in the company's product portfolio, tackling climate change, promoting its supplier and operational stewardship, and embodying responsibility as an employer.

In 2020, Trinseo produced approximately $3.0 billion in net sales and had 26 manufacturing sites globally with approximately 3,400 employees.
