Former New York City Mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg will kick off the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway Series with an event in Panama next year.

Following in the footsteps of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum and the Bloomberg New Economy Catalyst, the Bloomberg New Economy Gateway LatAm is aimed at increasing public and private sector collaboration, according to a news release. The target is both developed and emerging economies in the East, West, North and South. It will be the organization’s first event outside of Asia, the news release said.

“Panama is an ideal place for the first Bloomberg New Economy convening outside of Asia," Bloomberg, who also is founder of Bloomberg L.P. and Bloomberg Philanthropies, said in the news release. "Panama has long been a critical link between continents, helping Latin America to bridge north and south – just as our New Economy platform is working to do. We look forward to hosting discussions there with senior business and government leaders that will help shape a more modern global economy."

With an eye toward the future and prospects for economic growth in the region, the event is being staged with cooperation from the Panamanian government and will bring leaders from the region together to develop potential investments and outline the future of trade, the release said.

Bringing global leaders to the table for a discussion on key trade issues offers an opportunity to shift the economic paradigm. To develop the foundation for that change, the collaboration will center on the Bloomberg series’ key focal points of finance, cities, trade, climate and public health, according to the release.

At the center of the discussion will be potential investment opportunities in the region. Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo said that the country is pleased to host the event. Cortizo also said this opportunity can speed collaboration between business and the government at a time when it is needed most.
