General Logistics Systems (GLS) has acquired Canadian logistics company Mid-Nite Sun Transportation Ltd. to expand its reach in Canada.

In an Oct. 8 release, GLS Canada said the collaboration, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, will make way for growth opportunities with Canadian and U.S. customers. Mid-Nite Sun currently operates as Rosenau Transport, one of the largest independent freight carriers in Western Canada.

"As we link two regional carrier networks together, with direct service to most cities and towns in the country, we will produce one of the most integrated transportation systems in Canada,” Rick Barnes, president of GLS Canada, said in the release. “The extended geographical reach will provide our 30,000 clients with a new national and international alternative for all of their shipping needs."

GLS is a leading parcel service provider, according to the release. By acquiring the Canadian freight carrier, it will expand its reach to cover most of the Canadian population.

Entering the world's ninth largest economy in 2018 through the acquisition of Dicom, which operates a network of about 30 hubs and depots, the company has garnered a combined parcel and freight market of approximately C$25 billion that's growing about 5% per year, the release states.

Rosenau Transport has 24 owned hubs and depots throughout four provinces and generated a revenue of C$175 million within the last year, reported in August, according to the release.
